The ‘Pink Ribbon Programme’ was founded and developed by Doreen Puglisi, M.S. a former college professor with a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science. She provides a unique perspective on both theory and practice. She has transformed her professional, then personal experience with breast cancer into a successful therapeutic exercise programme for breast cancer survivors. The Programme is a gentle, staged process that begins when the survivor is either six weeks post-operative or has received surgeon’s approval to begin therapeutic exercise. However the programme is not restrictive and can be undertaken no matter how long ago your surgery/treatment took place.
The benefits of ‘The Pink Ribbon Programme’ are to;
The life-force of the Pink Ribbon Programme is to ensure that every woman has the ability to regain a sense of wellbeing that had been lost from diagnosis through surgery and into recovery.
The ‘Stepping Stone’ Pink Ribbon Programme provided by SCTE is based on a 2 hour session undertaken over a continuous 8 week period for 6 participants. This is support by a ‘home exercise’ booklet alongside informative hand outs to enhance learning.
Prior to the programme commencing each participant is visited to gain personal history and complete questionnaire establishing a baseline to assess benefits gained and improvements made upon the conclusion of the programme timetable. Such information helps the charity to obtain future funding supporting more participants in the future. The programme is then undertaken.
The first hour of each session provides the structurally progressive design of the Pink Ribbon therapeutic exercise programme; this is then followed by a variety of guest presenters covering both related informative subject matter and activity experiences. Past participants have enjoyed sessions on conducted nutrition and meditation to belly dancing and Nordic Walking. Each session is concluded with a ‘Care ‘n’ Share’ timeout where a broad variety of topics and experiences are discussed by participant’s.
3 months post the programme delivery one to one ‘Catch-up’ sessions are conducted with each individual where the ‘before and after’ benefits are assessed and discussed.
SCTE continues to support its participants making contact with them both at 6 months and 12 months following their participation in the Pink Ribbon Programme.
The programme endeavours to support and enhance the participants experience into mainstream activity, to provide a platform for friendship and greater social integration, to build on confidence and self-esteem but above all to ignite a lust for life.
A post-operative, pilates based, recovery programme.
