Supporting Confidence Through Exercise (SCTE) is a charity in its infancy; born out of a local North West Leicestershire community exercise instructor’s desire to provide the very best possible support for individuals living with or in remission from life changing conditions.
This concept has now developed into a structurally planned objective to encompass what is to become a much wider provision in the future. Focussing on opportunities to enhance recovery, condition management and building on an individual’s confidence and self-esteem through greater activity participation the charity endeavours to support and encourage those enduring challenges both physically and mentally through ‘Stepping Stone’ programmes to embrace being active and enjoy a healthy and fulfilling life.
In January 2012, following the North West Leicestershire Mammogram Programme, our instructor was shocked to discover that in just one of her Pilates classes 7 ladies had been diagnosed with varying forms of breast cancer. They were all keen to continue exercising and as their instructor she felt it was her duty to provide the best possible support specific to their needs.
Talking to individuals she ascertained that the recovery period that followed breast cancer surgery and other treatments was a physically uncertain time for breast cancer patients with most being released after surgery with little more direction for their physical rehabilitation than an instruction sheet or simplistic DVD detailing a few exercises. This, in addition to the worry of becoming physically limited by the effects of the surgery and other treatments that left them feeling tired and out of shape, compounded the situation and their emotions. Yet increasingly, research is showing us that physical activity can benefit such women in many ways - physically and emotionally at this critical juncture. Researching this further she read about the ‘Pink Ribbon Programme’ and the reasoning and benefits that could be gained from targeted exercise.
The extensive training and knowledge base provided to ‘Pink Ribbon Programme’ instructors who undertake certification enables them to adapt and develop exercises specific to the participant’s needs providing that invaluable ‘stepping stone’ to integration into mainstream physical activity, as well as a sense of confidence, wellbeing and a greater understanding of benefits gained through participating in physical activity specific to their condition moving forwards.
Becoming trained and utilising this knowledge within an established class environment and seeing the benefits gained by individuals, the thoughts were to establish the programme as a specific provision making contact with local GP surgeries, hospitals and specific charitable organisations raising their awareness of its availability. This was undertaken but to no avail. However not being deterred by this rejection the decision was made to forge ahead to create and develop a charitable organisation specifically to support this need, hence SCTE was founded in December 2015.
During its first year SCTE has gained its Charitable Independent Organisation status, has continued its fundraising efforts, been awarded a small grant from North West Leicestershire District Council along with receiving generous donations from local individuals and groups. This has enabled the charity to develop and deliver two programmes in our initial year. These programmes focussed on our foundational condition; Breast Cancer.
Moving forwards the charity aims to develop a further two programmes including Mental Wellbeing and Parkinson’s Disease; Education for Condition Management encompassing a cross section of conditions. Administratively we are pleased to be launching our website and we continue to pursue building relations with other charities both as a service provider and linked areas of interest.
